Paris is a city of culture and the arts, but its history and identity go so much deeper than that. Today, I will teach you about the history, culture, and cuisine of this marvelous city.
History: Paris was founded in the 3rd century by Celtic tribes, when the Romans conquered the city in 53 BC they called the city Lutetia. It became the capital of the Frankish Kingdom in 508 AD. The city was conquered by the English in 1420-1436 but was liberated by Joan of Arc. In 1789 the Bastille fell on July the 14 celebrated today as Bastille Day, this also lead to the creation of the first French Republic it would not be last considering that today is the 5th French Republic. Through 1793-94, the Reign of Terror happened, leading to the death of King Louis XVI. In 1799 Napoleon Bonaparte took over the government leading to him becoming emperor in 1804. The next French Revolution was in 1830 ( July Revolution) over throwing Charles the X ( brother of Louis) and putting his cousin, Louis Philippe, and in 1848 he was overthrown creating the 2nd French Republic. In December 1848 the first ever presidential election of France took place leading in the victory of Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (Napoleon’s nephew) and in 1851 he took over the government and crowning himself Emperor Napoleon the III. In 1871 he was defeated by the Germans and Paris went into revolution creating the Paris commune. The next major event that happened was in 1940 when the Germans captured the city Paris would not be liberated in 1944 by the Allies after D-Day. In 1945 the first post war elections happened, this is also a key fact because this was the first election were woman can vote leading to the creation of the 4th republic. In 1958 the 4th republic fell because of economic instability and decolonization. This only a few things that have happened in the great city.
Culture:Paris is known to be a center of art and architecture housing great museums such as the Louvre and the Pompidou. Paris is also a home of cuisine and etiquette. Some of the best foods include croissants and baguettes. These are just some of the classic foods in Paris, and trust me, they are all good. Paris is also a city of manners. You usually say “ bonjour “ to someone passing by and keep social conversations to a minimum. This is just some of the great things in this marvelous city.
